Following discussions with ACFSE at the latest meeting of the Low Voltage Directive (LVD) Working Party in Brussels in March 2007, the European Commission and EU member states have called on the European standards body CENELEC to implement higher fire safety requirements for television sets sold in Europe as a “matter of urgency”.
Specifically, CENELEC has been urged to introduce the IEC technical specification 62441 defining a so called “candle accessible area” on the back cover of television sets which needs to meet the V1 criteria. Following the Commission and member state recommendation, the new European television fire safety requirements should now be brought into force within 2 to 3 years. ACFSE strongly welcomes this development.
